 Ricky Ponting rates Brian Lara ahead of Sachin Tendulkar

Former Australia Captain Ricky Ponting feels West Indian batsman Lara enabled his team to win more matches as compared to Indian batsman Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar. So Punter rated Lara Ahead of Sachin.  

"Sachin and Lara were two stand-out batsman for me. Lara won more games for his team than Sachin probably has. I'd lose more sleep as captain knowing Lara was coming in to bat next day than I would with Sachin" said Ponting.

" You always found a way to restrict Sachin when you needed to. Lara could turn it on in half an hour and take a game away from you. For me, it has never been about winning game and series" said Ponting

Australia may have suffered a defeat in the first Test against England but he believes Australia will win the series.
 
"I said 2-1 to Australia at the start and nothing has changed for me" he added.

We have got a lot of hard work to do but it seems like things are on the right track.  It is a test match lost but it will encourage them (The Australians) to make a come back & think how close they are.

"If they can take that away from the first Test it will do them good at Lord's this week.
 We have some very good young players. they are just starting to find their way and Ashes series tend to bring out the best in some" he added.

1^st Ashes: England defeated Australia by 15 runs

In yet another fascinating Ashes Test, James Anderson displayed a superb spell of swing bowling on Day 5 as a result of which England defeated Australia by 15 runs to take a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.

Brad Haddin and James Pattinson were looking great and had a partnership of 65 runs for 10^th wicket. Straight away after Lunch, James Anderson stuck for England. Brad Haddin missed a ball from Anderson which went straight to Prior, England appealed but umpire Aleem Dar was not interested. Cook immediately reviewed the decision and 3^rd umpire took his time and Aleem Dar had to change his decision to given that out.

Earlier Brad Haddin and Ashton Agar started well and played almost 15 overs before he edged to slip. James Anderson bowled the similar delivery in his next over to get rid of new batsman Mitchell Starc.

He was back in rhythm and would have taken his 3^rd wicket of Peter Siddle but Cook dropped him down on the individual score of 10.

One end of the wicket was covered by Brad Haddin and wickets have been fallen down on the other end. Haddin counterattack the pace bowling attack of England.  Brad Haddin reached his half-century from consecutive boundaries off Steven Finn.  Haddin scored 15 runs in Finn’s ninth over & played aggressively under pressure.

This test was completely dominated by England’s bowlers and particularly by James Anderson who took his 10 wicket haul. This test would be remembered for brilliant ton by Ian Bell who allowed England to take over 300 runs lead.

Australia on the other hand would want to take their own positives from the match. Ashton Agar made his sensational debut and Phillip Hughes, Chris Rogers and not to forget Brad Haddin too impressed with their individual efforts. The tail-enders however were exceptional and after that last-wicket partnership in the second innings, the Aussies can enter the second Test with their heads held high.

Apart from Ian Bell's stupendous ton, batsmen of both the teams struggled to score runs and it was the bowling department that made the difference. England were the clear favourites ahead of the match and they have lived up to the expectations

James Anderson bowled beautifully right throughout the match and his match-winning effort gave a clear edge to the hosts.
